Abstract : A limited investigation is made of the scatteredfield response of a linear array of centerloaded cylindrical elements illuminated by a plane electromagnetic wave with a step function of time variation. The theoretical approach utilizes Fourier's theorem to express the transient response as a sum of the steadystate responses to the individual sinewave components of the stepfunction illumination. The number of array elements and their spacing can be determined simply from the time variation of the backscattered field, provided the angle of incidence of the illumination is known and adequately large to separate the component transient waves. In the case of an Nelement array, it is found that the transient field scattered in any arbitrary direction in the H plane can be represented as a summation of N appropriately timedelayed components, each with the same time variation as the field scattered in the reflected direction but with an amplitude reduced by a factor of 1/N.
