Abstract : From November 1963 to March 1964 census of sea snakes in South China Sea and East Indian Ocean was taken 170 times. Most snakes were found in shallow water regions of South China Sea. Their restriction to shallow waters is due to the fact that they are related to a considerable extent to the bottom. An especially large number of the sea snakes was revealed in areas where the current rotates, which prevents the organisms described and their young in particular from being carried out to sea. Pelamis platurus L. made 55 per cent of all the sea snakes found in the investigated region. (Author)
