Abstract : A complete qualitative investigation of the impact of a circular cone with a certain apex angle on an infinite elastic diaphragm of constant thickness is presented. The cone moves at a constant speed along its axis and strikes the diaphragm at a right angle. Three stages in the motion of the diaphragm material are discerned: (1) the purely radial motion of diaphragm elements in the protion of diaphragm which is not in contact with the cone; (2) radial and axial motion in the portion enveloping the cone; and (3) the motion in the portion between (1) and (2) where the diaphragm is deflected but is not yet in contact with the cone; there is a discontinuity in motion of diaphragm elements. Two time-dependent functions which describe the states of stress and strain in the diaphragm are determined for each stage, so that solutions for various impact speeds can be obtained. The effects of impact speed and of the apex angle on the deformation of the diaphragm (enveloping the cone apex) are examined at large, taking into account the angle of friction between the materials of the diaphragm and the cone.
