Abstract : Relationships between the mechanical properties of electrodeposited iron and the pH of the bulk of the solution were obtained for a chloride/fluoborate plating bath. Both ultimate tensile strength and percentage elongation at fracture passed through a maximum over a narrow range of pH. Structural studies using optical and electron microscopy supported the results of the experiments on mechanical properties. A relationship between the average surface-roughness height of the deposit and the bulk pH was also obtained. The results are explained in terms of hydrogen evolution and hydroxide precipitation.
