Abstract : The paper gives a calculation of the boundary layer forming at the electrodes during the flow of the electrically conducting gas in an MHD generator duct, with a uniform magnetic field parallel to the electrodes and perpendicular to the flow. It is assumed that the interelectrode distance changes linearly along the flow. If the boundary layers are assumed to be fairly thin and their electrical resistance is ignored, the flow in the region outside the boundary layer may be regarded as independent of that within it. The region outside the boundary layer will henceforth be referred to as the central region of the flow. On the basis of the assumptions made, the central region of the flow was calculated using a onedimensional theory, ignoring the viscosity and thermal conductivity of the gas. The calculations were performed with an electrical conductivity coefficient dependent on temperature according to an exponential law. The calculations yielded figures for the dependence of the dynamic and thermodynamic characteristics of the flow in the central region on the coordinates along the axis of the duct, under conditions of a given pressure drop between the receiver and the outlet section of the duct, and for various values of the load parameter and the electrode aperture angle. These characteristics were used as boundary conditions in calculating the flow in the boundary layer near the electrodes. In the boundary layer flow calculations use was made of a boundary layer magnetohydrodynamic equation at low Reynolds numbers. (Author)
