Abstract : A method is proposed for calculating the parameters of a pendulum-type damper as applied to multiple-mass torsional systems. The computational formulas are based on theoretical research. Since this type of damper has not been used in actual systems, its operation was experimentally checked on a special laboratory setup. The results of the experimental studies are given and compared with the results of calculation by the proposed method. The following conclusions are made on the basis of experimental investigation of the operation of the pendulum-type damper. This type of damper is an effective means for reducing the amplitude of torsional resonance vibrations. The addition of a tuned damper to the experimental installation reduced the elastic moments (stresses) in the couplings by a factor of 3-5 as compared to those in the system without the damper. The proposed computational method has been checked out satisfactorily by experiment, and may be recommended for calculation in real systems. The optimum coefficient of viscous friction may be varied over a wide range, which is important from the standpoint of operation and adjustment of the pendulum-type damper. In contrast to the pendulum-type vibration mount, the maximum effect in the pendulum-type damper is reached at a certain negative frequency difference. (Author)
