Abstract : The changes in the neutral constituents in the D-region following high level ionization pulses, such as those caused by nuclear detonations, is reexamined with regard to the effects of updated rate constants, charged particle reactions and ambient neutral constituents. The major differences from the results of Branscomb and LeLevier are: Longer persistence of the nitrogen atom concentrations; Early formation by charged particle reactions of high levels of nitric oxide, and to a lesser extent, of nitrogen dioxide during the day; The formation of N2O, which has a decay time measured in months.
