Abstract : The purpose of the present work was to see just how drastic freezing conditions could be to obtain an oriented composite when one component was a strong fiber-former. An organic system was chosen for the experiments to permit observation of the freezing interface under the microscope. The system camphor-N, N-dimethyl p-nitroaniline was found to exhibit the desired characteristics. Camphor solidifies in a non-faceted manner, whereas the aniline produces needles or rods.
