Abstract : The venom of the Indian cobra, Naja naja was fractionated into its component parts by ammonium sulfate fractionation and chromatography on carboxymethyl Sephadex C-25. Each of eighteen salt fractions was analyzed by ion exchange chromatography. The results were interpreted by a novel treatment of the data, involving an assumption that many of the components were acting as independent entities in the salt solution. Conditions were defined for the isolation of four different neurotoxic proteins and two central nervous system toxins from the venom, as well as any one of a dozen other components whose isolation might be desirable.
