Abstract : The presence of the 'lone pair' of electrons on the nitrogen atom introduces a number of new features into the infrared (and Raman) spectra of organic nitrogen compounds. These include conformational problems arising from the relative orientations which the 'lone pair' orbital may take up, intramolecular electronic effects, and the ability of the N atom to act as a proton acceptor in intramolecular XH...N hydrogen bonds, thereby stabilizing certain conformations. Many of these features have not yet been well-characterized in high-resolution infrared spectra. Others have been documented in the chemical literature, but their origins at the molecular level are poorly understood. The overall aim of this research project is the detailed interpretation of high-resolution infrared spectra of selected organo-nitrogen compounds, with particular reference to molecular conformations and intramolecular hydrogen bonds.
