Abstract : A new model, the 'pulsating ignition model,' is postulated for the turbulent combustion of gases. According to this model, turbulence affects combustion only (or mianly) via fluctuating velocities with scales less than the laminar flame zone width. Thus, turbulent combustion is directly associated with the mechanism of turbulent mixing via velocity fluctuations in such a manner that as a result of the turbulent mixing of burned and unburned gases, the ignition of a given island of unburned gas occurs on the elementary diffusion path.
