Abstract : A short, small aspect ratio thin hydrofoil is analysed for flutter instability. A general approach to n-degree-of-freedom fluttering systems is discussed, and the problem is then reduced to one of three degrees of freedom. The hydrofoil is assumed to be undergoing chordwise camber deformations besides the conventional bending-torsion modes. Equations of motion are developed and solved for this system and the flutter determinant is obtained. This is solved for various specific parameters and the results are compared with those obtained through use of the bending-torsion modes only. It appears that the camber deformations have an effect upon the critical flutter speed of the foil. (Author)
