Abstract : Pre and post flare H-alpha plage configurations for 132 major flares over a period of more than two years were examined. The records of H-alpha plage configurations at the Manila Observatory showed a predisposing visual indication of major flare activity was a gradual folding and sharpening of plage streamers into a roughly gamma or lambda shape. Major flares occurred within the accuracy of position measurements at the junction of these bright streamers. When these configurations softened into rounded shapes, the likelihood of a major flare in these areas for the interval studied, dwindled to zero. (Author)
