Abstract : The Combat Service Support System (CS3), a mobile data processing system, is specifically designed to accompany troops in the field. CS3 is to be used for the automated processing and control of information pertaining to the function of logistic support and personnel management. The purpose of this contract was to provide, for the U.S. Army, a data processing/data communications system, composed of standard commercial equipment, permanently mounted in vehicles in a manner that permits movement over unimproved roads and operation under extreme climatic conditions. This report describes the procedures and controls employed by the contractor in the design, fabrication, integration, testing and delivery of the data processing systems called for by the contract, as of 31 December 1968. The approach taken by the contractor was to establish one basic configuration, which could be modified to meet the requirements of each individual user. In this configuration, the IBM System/360 computer and related equipment required for each data processing center, is installed in trailer-vans which are towed by standard Army prime movers. Equipment required at each of the several remote stations is housed in a single shelter, mounted on a standard 2 1/2 ton truck. Power for all units is supplied by trailer-mounted engine generators.
