Abstract : Solar energy conversion by the use of thin films in photovoltaic and thermoelectric devices is discussed. Experimental work is presented on the fabrication of a thin film cadmium sulfide cell which utilizes the photovoltaic effect. A theoretical investigation is made of the temperature differences obtainable in space by using thin, light-weight plastic sheets, and the use of such plastics for thermoelectric generators is discussed. Temperature differences of several hundred centrigrade degrees can be obtained. (Author)
