Abstract : A narrative report is given on the achievements of the multiship operation MEDOC-69 whose objective was the combined study of air-sea exchange processes and the formation of deep bottom water in the Western Mediterranean Sea during the winter season. In general the operation covered a period of reconnaissance wherein an area of maximum surface density was located and identified, followed by an intensive survey of the water masses. With the onset of a prolonged mistral storm condition the density was increased to the point where deep overturning took place with marked changes in the deep water and general distributions. As the season moved on the density showed a progressive return to normalcy. Direct current measurement and observations demonstrated the formation of a gyre within the area of maximum density with strong shear about the periphery. Vertical velocities were measurable.
