Abstract : The ability of four zinc oxide - eugenol formulations to serve as long-term intermediate restorative materials was investigated. They were: (a) zinc oxide - eugenol, (b) zinc oxide - eugenol + EBA (ethoxybenzoic acid), (c) reinforced zinc oxide - eugenol, and (d) a reinforced zinc oxide - eugenol, prepared from surface-treated zinc oxide particles. The compressive strength, tensile strength, solubility in water and dilute organic acid, abrasion resistance, and hardness were measured to ascertain their basic physical properties. The compressive strength ranged from 230 to 7,800 p.s.i., tensile strength from 190 to 590 p.s.i., and solubility in acetic acid at 5 days from 8.56 to 41.01 mg/square cm. The significance of the physical properties and their application is discussed. (Author)
