Abstract : Apart from metallic sheathing, certain toxic chemicals can enhance the natural durability of timbers. It appears that no preservative can offer permanent protection to wooden hulls of fishing boats against all marine borers but they can only resist and retard their rapid deterioration under normal conditions. A successful method of wood protection in seawater is therefore of urgent economic importance all over the world and more particularly in the tropical waters of India. (Author)
