Abstract : The protective properties of various media on lyophilized preparations of the vaccinal strain of foot and mouth disease virus can be rapidly determined upon storage at 56 and 37 degrees. Marked protective effects were exhibited by media containing skim milk and sucrose, sucrose gelatin and agar, and peptone with gelatin, but not by medium consisting of 5% egg mixture and 0.2% gelatin. The most convenient and promising was a medium containing 4% peptone and 1% gelatin. In experiments in white mice, no inhibition of immunogenic properties of the vaccinal strain of foot and mouth disease virus was observed. (Author)
