Abstract : An evaluation of the droplet growth by gravitational coalescence is made by taking into consideration the effect of the eddy fluctuations in the vertical currents. It is found that under the influence of the fluctuating upcurrents, cloud droplets may grow to larger drops of different sizes ranging from minute precipitating elements to raindrops. A more reasonable explanation of the formation of rain in shallow warm clouds is then suggested. (Author)
