Abstract : Normal silver amalgam was compared with amalgam containing SnF2 in the concentration of 1.5% of the alloy. Two hundred extracted teeth were covered with wax wxcept for a window 10 mm x 5 mm on the buccal surface. A preparation was made to the depth of dentin. The teeth were decalcified in 4 ml 0.025 M lactic acid for 30 minutes. Normal amalgam restorations were placed in 100 teeth; experimental restorations in 100 teeth. After seven days, the restorations were removed and the teeth again decalcified. Phosphorus and fluoride analyses were determined for each decalcification. Re phosphorus, teeth with normal amalgam showed a reduction from 68.7 micrograms P/ml to 41.9 micrograms P/ml and the experimental amalgam showed a reduction of 69.6 micrograms P/ml to 13.4 nucrigrans P/ml. Samples of the experimental alloy were tested by the National Bureau of Standards. No deleterious effects on physical properties of the amalgam were noted when fluoride was added to the alloy.
