Abstract : The inviscid linearized stability analysis was used to examine the growth of disturbances in the two-dimensional wake of a thin airfoil. Through a combined stability analysis, wherein small disturbances are permitted to grow in both time and space, the relationship between the disturbance characteristics for the temporal and spatial reference frames is shown. Qualitative as well as quantitative differences are found to exist between the characteristics of the most highly amplified disturbances obtained for the two reference frames. In the wake stability analyses, two types of disturbances are considered. The first type has a transverse velocity component that is symmetrical with respect to the wake centerplanes. The second has a transverse velocity component which is antisymmetric with respect to the wake center plane. It is found that the most highly amplified disturbances in the wake region analyzed are those of the first type. Experiments concerning the downstream development of the wake of a thin airfoil were conducted in a water tank using the hydrogen bubble technique and the hot film anemometry. The mean-velocity profiles at successive downstream locations were determined and utilized in the stability analyses. (Author)
