Abstract : A method for the automated assay of whole blood, plasma, or red blood cell (RBC) cholinesterase in blood samples from the dog is described. The procedure is rapid, sensitive, and highly reproducible. The effects of substrate concentration, hemolysis of RBC's, washing of RBC's, and sampling speeds have been evaluated. Normal cholinesterase levels, and normal variations in canine RBC and plasma cholinesterase during a 2-week period are given. A micromethod has also been developed; it requires 75 microliters of whole blood, plasma, or RBC's for cholinesterase assay. (Author)
