Abstract : The application of minimum time control to a large class of chemical processes provides several unique problems not normally encountered in other fields. The nature of the problems essentially rules out any straight-forward application of the minimum principle and should be at least recognized before any workable control strategy can be designed using the potential of optimal control. This report will discuss some of the practical problems involved with directly applying minimum-time control and will offer a workable design of a 'time-optimal' controller, applicable to the class of chemical processes under consideration.
