Abstract : The total backdirected electron yield due to 0.4- to 1.4-MeV electrons incident normally on aluminum, copper, and lead has been measured. Retarding-potential measurements were taken to investigate the low-energy component of the backdirected flux. Careful checks were made to ensure that no error was introduced from bremsstrahlung or other external sources of electron emission. The results show that the low-energy emission is much less than previously reported and that the total emission lies between the results of Dressel (1966) and those of Wright and Trump (1962). Improvements in the design of the apparatus are described and the effects of the improvements are demonstrated. (Author)
