Abstract : The objective of this investigation was to make a contribution to the study of 'spontaneous alternation' in rats (alternated choice between two runways). In our own experiments and those reported in literature, the animals were either given food reward or not upon arrival in the goal. In the present investigation the rats had to swim instead of to run and reward consisted in escape from water. The results show that also in this test behavior is guided by the same rules as in previous tests. Moreover it could be shown that not only stimuli inside the maze, but also stimuli from outside the maze, influence behavior of the animals. (Author)
