Abstract : Four male beagle dogs received 150 rads whole-body x irradiation (WBR). Subsequent determinations of platelet to glass adhesiveness, platelet count, white blood cell count and hematocrit were made. Platelet adhesiveness showed a significant decrease in all subjects after exposure. The maximum decrease was noted on the 11th day with recovery to preirradiation levels completed by day 35. Platelet count, white blood cell count and hematocrit showed the usual characteristic changes postirradiation. The contribution of this qualitative change in platelet behavior to the hemorrhagic diathesis following WBR requires further investigation. (Author)
