Abstract : The Patuxent River has the largest drainage basin in the State of Maryland. The estuary of the Patuxent is tributary to the Chesapeake Bay which itself is an estuary. A distinguishing feature of the Patuxent Estuary is its intermittent transition from a two-layer flow system to a three-layer flow system, a transition which occurs most often in the month of April.
