Abstract : The proposed method for automatic color separation of the mapped elements on a map compilation is based on the use of the spectal sensitivity of the photoelectric unit of the photomultiplier tracking system and the use of colors with a definite reflection (emission) spectrum. There are two variants of this method, which can be called photoelectronic color separation. In the first variant the line elements on the map compilation are drafted in the ordinary inks, distinguishable in color, reflecting two of the three zones of the visible part of the spectrum: blue, green, red. This variant affords the possibility for three-color separation of the map compilation. Photoelectronic color separation has essential differences from reproduction color separation used in map production. In the photoelectronic method the desired color separation effect is obtained at once after introducing the tracking device into its tracking regime because the light flux reflected from the tracked line instantaneously causes photoemission. In the second variant of photoelectronic color separation, linear symbols are drafted on the map compilation in the luminescent inks used in three-color photomechanical color separation. The use of luminescent inks for finalizing map compilations has a number of advantages over ordinary inks. (Author)
