Abstract : At the present time the status of Black Sea mullets is somewhat depressed, which is associated with a decrease in the quantity of the main commercial mullet - Mugil auratus, called the golden gray mullet. Its schools have undergone substantial changes, such as rejuvenation, increase in the growth rate, unbalance of male and female ratios, etc. The decrease in the numbers of the golden gray mullet off the Crimean and Caucasian coasts has been caused by a number of factors, namely: intensification of fishing in winter by catching not only the mature mullets but also their young; mass destruction and fishing of all ages of mullets in the severe winter of 1953/54; decrease in the production of young because of a decrease in the productivity of the Black Sea in subsequent years and the development of mullet fisheries in limans where only immature fishes are caught.
