Abstract : The octet S7/2 ground state Gd3+ is split only 0.149/cm by the cubic crystal field in CaF2 and is described at 11.3 kG by the projection quantum number J sub Z referred to the magnetic field axis and behaves like a spin 7/2 system with an isotropic g value of 1.991. The excited states are most conveniently described with reference to the 4-fold axes. The calculation of the dependence of the Zeeman spectra of Gd3+ in CaF2 at sites of cubic symmetry on crystal orientation, therefore, requires transformation of one set of basis to a common Cartesian reference frame. The Zeeman spectra shows the states of the crystal field split hextet P(7/2) and hextet P(5/2) multiplets. The transitions are magnetic dipole in agreement with the results for other rare earth ions at cubic sites. Experimental and calculated splittings are compared. (Author)
