Abstract : A Newtonlike method called the weak Newton method is described. This procedure coincides with the standard NewtonKantorovich method whenever the latter is welldefined. The weak Newton method is applied to a large class of two point boundary value problems including the EulerLagrange equation for simple variational problems. The NewtonKantorovich method is not welldefined for this class of problems. Numerical solutions to three wellknown variational problems which were obtained using this procedure are included. (Author)
