Abstract : In liquid scintillation counting of radioactive beta emiters quenching agents interfere with energy transfer processes. It is shown that the quenching effect of distilled water, acid and basic reagents depends on the fluor, also on solvents as well as co-solvents such as Biosolve, Triton X, etc. Four systems, Bray solution, Triton X-100, Biosolve BBS-3, and BBOT are compared. It is shown that with the Biosolve system hydrogen peroxide in moderate concentration decreases the counting efficiency very little. This system is thus advantageous, where wet oxidation of the sample is performed prior to liquid scintillation counting. (Author)
