Abstract : It is most probable that stage a or primitive sleep of the premature and newborn, with its intense motricity is representative of a more archaic motor discharge than paradoxical sleep with its rapid eye-movements and its small movements of the extremities. This more intense motor discharge is predominant in the premature, probably because his incomplete nervous maturation does not yet permit to inhibit these motor discharges of sub-cortical origin. It is interesting to note that the motor inhibition increases when the rapid eye-movements appear and that their occurrence coincides with the appearance of quiet sleep. (Author)
