Abstract : An experimental study of the circuit used in earlier experiments showed that oscillations observed were due to the interaction of the electron beam with undesirable modes and space-harmonics which were neglected in the previous study. Two types of helix-derived circuits, a tightly wound helix with a longitudinally conducting shield and a bifilar helix, were considered as possible substitutes for the twisted slow-wave structure. The bifilar helix appears attractive as an experimental tool to investigate various interaction mechanisms and the velocity spread. The effect of finite size of the beam on the longitudinal velocity spread was considered. The result of theoretical study shows that the ultimate efficiency and/or the power output may be limited by this effect. (Author)
