Abstract : Because systematic observations of atmospheric pressure are not made in the central areas of oceans and seas, the isobars are usually drawn on the basis of observational data obtained from meteorological stations located along the coast or on islands. Thus, extrapolation and interpolation are used in determining pressure gradients for various sea areas; as a result, errors are introduced into the calculated data. The numerical magnitudes of the errors and the degree of accuracy are analyzed with the aid of various mathematical formulas based on statistical and theoretical investigations. On the basis of special observations it is found that the errors and the degree of accuracy vary from one sea area, or a sea, to the other and therefore special formulas are derived for various areas, determining the numerical values of correction coefficients that are to be used in each individual case. Also the errors in interpolation defined by the values of pressure gradient and geostrophic wind are compared and evaluated; in this connection, the range and average values of mean square errors associated with the calculation of the velocity of geostrophic and surface wind are determined.
