Abstract : The purpose of the research was to study the far infrared, infrared and Raman spectra of a series of organohalosilanes in order to better understand the internal forces in these organometallic compounds and to aid in identifying useful polymers as they are prepared. The low frequency region of the vibrational spectra of six organotrichlorosilanes are reported together with a detailed analysis of the spectra. In addition, the complete vibrational spectra of alpha-chlorovinyltrichlorosilane, vinyltrifluorosilane, hexachlorodisiloxane, phenylsilane and phenylsilane-d3 are analyzed in detail. The far infrared spectra - in most cases - were recorded of dilute solutions in benzene whereas the mid-infrared spectra were obtained from either contact films or gaseous samples. The Raman spectra were invariably recorded of liquid samples. In analyzing the data, particular attention was paid to the extent coupling of vibrations between light and heavy atoms. Results of the investigation include well established characteristic frequencies for the SiCl3 group, structural information and thermodynamic data concerning silicon compounds, and information concerning both hindered and free internal rotation. Finally, a survey of existing vibrational data on methyl- and ethylhalosilanes has been included. (Author)
