Abstract : The origin of pulse formation in lasers is investigated. The well established model of a homogeneously broadened laser is used to show that coherent ultra-short light pulses in lasers are formed in the presence of a sufficiently strong pump. A traveling wave, ring laser model is analyzed in detail. Necessary and sufficient conditions for pulse formation in this system are established. The pulse velocity and pulse shape are calculated exactly in the linear and nonlinear regions. The method of analysis which is developed for the ring laser is extended to a model for an opposing-wave ring laser and a Fabry-Perot laser. In the latter two cases, a strong coupling between the forward and the backward waves exists. Pulse velocities and pulse shapes are calculated with this nonlinear coupling taken into account. The calculations are valid for all levels of pumping. (Author)
