Abstract : The special form of the transport equation in which all variables except the energy was averaged out is derived as an equlibrium condition. This equation, often called the energy degradation equation, is then applied to the problem of hard spheres slowing down in a collection of hard spheres, and the flux spectrum is calculated. The effects of binding on the spectrum are then investigated, still using the hard sphere interaction. These effects are illustrated by various numerical results which suggest that adequate consideration of binding in the corresponding problem of electron slowing down may explain discrepanies between measurements and previous calculations.
