Abstract : A preliminary investigation of the rheo-optical behavior of an ethylene-carbon monoxide copolymer was made. This study revealed that the carbonyl groups can fit into the crystalline lattice of polyethylene. This was noted by infrared dichroism measurements. X-ray studies also indicated some distortion of the ethylene unit cell parameters due to incorporation of the carbonyl group in the lattice. The dynamic mechanical spectra of polyethylene and of the copolymer were essentially identical indicating that the presence of the carbonyl (1%) does not significantly alter such bulk properties.
