Abstract : Thin and highly deformed slices of metals were produced by ultramicrotomy for direct observation in the transmission electron microscope, and in numbers large enough to serve as powder specimens for x-ray diffraction studies. The nature of the deformation structure for several different alloys in the Cu-Ge system, as well as some pure metals, was revealed. Subsequently the observed variations were compared with the x-ray diffraction analyses. As a result some of the assumptions used in the analysis of x-ray diffraction patterns in terms of stacking faults and twin faults have been shown to be inadequate. The behavior of certain alloys on recrystallization or on annealing was followed in the electron microscope where nucleation and growth of the recrystallized materials were observed. A special orientation relationship with respect to the deformed lattice for certain fast growing grains could be described in terms of high order (114) twins. In addition the role of stacking faults on the structure and transformation products of several alloys in the Cu-Ga system was investigated. (Author)
