Abstract : The objective of this program has been to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of high-rate plastic deformation of metals. Single crystal specimens of an fcc metal (Cu) and a bcc metal (Nb) were deformed; the macroscopic yielding behavior was noted for each material as a function of strain rate, and the structures of the deformed crystals were studied by metallographic techniques. In addition to the single-crystal work, a study was made of the character of slip bands in polycrystalline iron and a mild steel as a function of temperature. This permitted comparisons to be made between the behavior of different bcc metals. (Author)
