Abstract : The (g)-factors of S(-), S2(-), and S3(-) trapped in alkali-halide crystals are discussed and compared with that of the paramagnetic center in ultramarine. It appears highly probable that the latter is S3(-). Confirmatory evidence has been obtained with the aid of the Raman effect. An analysis of the g-factors of S3(-) suggests that the blue colour of ultramarine is due to a doublet A(1) from doublet B(1) transition of S3(-). (Author)
