Abstract : Analytical solutions are obtained for the pressure, flow rate, load-carrying capacity and friction force for the steady and laminar flow of inelastic, isothermal, incompressible non-Newtonian fluids (that is, lubricants) in infinite-length step-shaped bearings. The Rabinowitsch equation is used for the non-Newtonian behavior where the viscosity varies nonlinearly with the shear stress. The solution is applicable to both dilatant and pseudoplastic non-Newtonian fluids, and for the case of Newtonian fluids, it can be reduced to a form consistent with the published results for the Newtonian case. The pressure distribution, flow rate, load-carrying capacity and friction force are calculated numerically for several examples, and the results are compared with the corresponding solutions for a Newtonian fluid.
