Abstract : A large signal analytical theory for klystron current waves has been worked out. The theory in effect bridges the gap between the Hahn-Ramo type small signal space charge wave theory and Webster's very large signal ballistic theory. The third order theory also describes the high order harmonics, e.g. the fifth harmonic, correctly. A computer analysis of large signal waves, based on an analytic method to account for the electronic forces, has also been carried out. A variety of beam geometries has been considered. An extensive computer analysis of the large signal traveling wave tube is presented. Again the computer program utilizes earlier analytical results. The results describe amplitude and phase nonlinearities and saturation phenomena. Cross modulation and intermodulation with an arbitrary number of carriers in a limited frequency band is studied analytically. Cross modulation between two widely separated carriers has been measured and found to be in good agreement with an earlier theory. Earlier work in connection with slow wave structures for traveling wave tubes revealed that basic electromagnetic field formulae had to be revised when the propagation medium was spatially dispersive. The present work applies the new results on the case of ferromagnetic media. (Author)
