Abstract : An additive was developed for MIL-H-5606A (red oil) aircraft hydraulic fluid which reduces flow frictional losses in turbulent flow. This additive, a long chain polymer, extends the laminar range beyond the normal laminar to turbulent transition region. The potential advantage of an additive to delay the flow transition is a reduction of system weight by decreasing the line sizes. The evaluation of this potential was the intent of the study.
