Abstract : The paper is a compilation of three short technical descriptions of various aspects of the Department of Defense strategicdeployment linear programming work. The individual sections describe a related set of problems: What were the DOD strategicdeployment problems and solution techniques in 1967. What were the subsequent model versions, and how did these formulations occur, and finally, what is the matrixgeneration technique that has been employed. The document is designed to provide an informative description of the approach, techniques, applications, and some problems encountered in the use of largescale mathematical programming in this area. Of particular note is the matrixgenerator concept. (Author)
