Abstract : The article pertains to the design and construction of culverts and other water passages along railroad lines and highways for water streams likely to freeze up under winter conditions. Several design recommendations are made for the purpose of keeping the water flowing freely. Culverts and other water passageways should be designed with consideration of the various heat losses which occur in the channel. Flow rates and velocities of streams are other important factors to be considered in the design of culverts, bridges, and other water passages. (Author)
