Abstract : Progress toward the experimental measurement of real, time-dependent radar signatures of an object is described. The concept of the radar signature of an object as a characteristic response in time is briefly reviewed and illustrated. Possible approaches to the problem of experimental measurement of these signatures are discussed, and the reasons for our selection of a discrete frequency sampling technique enumerated. A chronological review of the reflectivity systems utilized for target signature measurements is given together with sample data to illustrate the capabilities and limitations of the systems. Finally, an advanced multi-frequency system is suggested and the envisioned orderly evolution of such a system described. (Author)
