Abstract : Laminar forced convection film boiling is analyzed as a two phase boundary layer problem. The model postulated assumes a liquid outer boundary layer with a vapor sublayer. Due to the presence of the vapor sublayer, large slip occurs between the solid surface and the liquid-vapor interface. This results in very small skin friction. Subcooling decreases slip, thereby increasing skin friction and heat transfer. The effect of subcooling is predicted to be large at low to moderate surface temperatures. (Author)
